UK Research and Development Grants

R&D grants in the UK range from Innovate UK SMART funding to collaborative research with universities. This guide covers the main programmes, the difference between grants and tax credits, and how to build a fundable R&D project.

R&D funding in the UK works through two parallel systems that are often confused. R&D tax credits (now consolidated into the R&D Expenditure Credit) are a tax mechanism - you claim back a proportion of qualifying R&D spend through your corporation tax return. R&D grants are forward-looking - you apply for funding before the work begins, and money is paid as the project progresses. The two can be used together, subject to subsidy rules, and understanding both gives you a much clearer picture of the total public support available for your innovation.

Innovate UK R&D grants

Innovate UK is the primary route for R&D grants aimed at commercial businesses. Its SMART grant programme funds feasibility studies, industrial research, and experimental development. Award sizes reflect the stage: feasibility projects typically receive £25,000–£100,000; industrial research and experimental development projects can receive up to £2 million for collaborative work. Most competitions prioritise areas where the UK has strategic ambitions - but the broad SMART strand has no sector restriction.

UKRI research council grants

For R&D with a stronger research component, UKRI's seven research councils fund collaborative projects between businesses and academic institutions. EPSRC covers engineering and physical sciences. BBSRC covers biosciences. MRC covers medical research. These grants typically have longer timelines and larger awards than Innovate UK's business-focused programmes. The university collaboration requirement is non-negotiable - these grants are designed to pull academic research into commercial application.

Catapult centres

The UK's nine Catapult centres act as bridges between research and industry. They run funded programmes, challenge competitions, and collaborative projects - and access to specialist equipment and expertise often adds value well beyond the grant itself. If your R&D involves hardware development, clinical testing, or advanced manufacturing processes, a Catapult collaboration is worth exploring.

Horizon Europe and international R&D

The UK formally associated to Horizon Europe in 2024, restoring access to the EU's flagship research funding programme. UK businesses and researchers can now participate in Horizon Europe calls - including the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator, which offers grants of up to €2.5 million plus equity investment for breakthrough innovators.
